Project Description

Matt grew up on the Southside of Brisbane before joining the Royal Australian Navy in February 1986. After his initial entry training, he went on to serve in HMAS Stalwart, Parramatta, Stuart. Matt deployed to the US as commissioning crew for the Kanimbla and Manoora. 

On return to Australia, Matt joined the RAN Clearance Diving Branch in 1995. Following postings to AUS CDT One, RAN Diving and EOD School and Navy Headquarters South Queensland, he retired from full time service as a Chief Petty Officer Clearance Diver in 2008. Matt continued to serve in the Reserves until full retirement in March 2018. Matt served on operations in the South Pacific, Somalia, Southern Ocean, Iraq and Defence Aid to the Community tasking’s. 

From 2008 to 2016 Matt was been busy in the field of Disaster Operations with positions as a Senior Maritime Officer with Maritime Safety Queensland and Senior Capability Development Officer in Brisbane City Council as well as a 2 year contract as a Specialist Advisor to the UAE Coast Guard. 

Matt joined the RSL in 2014 with a drive to serve and support the Veteran community. His wife and son often see him off on adventure challenges supporting Veterans and various ESO’s. Matt continues to promote the values and Objects of the RSL through his activities and participation in local school’s Remembrance Day services, displays and public speaking. 

Since joining the League, Matt has served on the Board of Beachmere Sub Branch standing down as President in March 2018 to nominate for the District Vice President position. As the newly elected Vice President, Matt continues as a member of the District Welfare Grants Committee and State Constitution and Awards Committee.
